I met with Alexa at the Swanwick Writers’ Conference, nervously awaiting feedback on a short story I’d submitted to her a few weeks in advance of the conference. Alexa was so personable and down to earth that I felt at ease straight away. She was positive and enthusiastic about the story but also gave me some useful pointers, particularly on pacing where the piece had galloped away with itself in the middle. It’s obvious now, of course, but I needed somebody to point it out. Not only was Alexa’s feedback all extremely useful but I liked her delivery – positive or ‘useful’, it was expressed with the same sensitivity, enthusiasm and humour and I would defy anybody to be offended by any critique Alexa could give. Would I recommend Alexa’s editorial services? Unequivocally yes!

Thank you for my 1:1 at Swanwick, your advice in a couple of areas gave me a eureka ‘of course’ moment that I was hoping to find, like a literary massage releasing the knots from the body of my novel.

I found that Lexi had many helpful and pertinent things to say about the first chapters of my novel, which will stand me in good stead when I revise it next. But where I found her most incisive was in discussing the synopsis.
She made me realise that I hadn’t conveyed  adequately what the book was about, and some of the information would be misleading to an agent who only had this to go on. She helped me think this through and afterwards I felt I could rewrite the synopsis so that it was much closer to how I want my novel to be perceived.
Very helpful, thank you.

I just wanted to say a big thank you for taking the time to speak to me at Swanwick, for all your advice and kind words. They were really helpful and gave me great confidence.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Contemporary & Literary Fiction Course at Swanwick 2011, taught by Alexa Radcliffe-Hart. It combined theory and practice via  innovative workshop style teaching methods. Unlike other writing courses, on plotting, novel writing and similar, this covered things I simply couldn’t get from a book! Her 1:1 mentoring session was incredibly insightful, and made me think about broad as well as narrower issues in my manuscript, including tense and tone. An excellent, generous spirited tutor!

Your course at Swanwick and your kindness and support has boosted my confidence and proved to me that I’m on the right track. I will be honest, I really wasn’t sure about the course at Swanwick, especially when I realised that the classes were mainly writing straight off! However, I like to challenge myself and, after the first class…I couldn’t wait to get to the second! You’ve helped me look from so many different perspectives. While writing yesterday, my mind was seeing the scenes differently and I’m really excited about it. Even reading a few pages to my partner last night, it’s the best first draft I’ve ever written! I wouldn’t have made that leap without you, Lexi, thank you so much.

I want to thank you for the excellent course you gave at Swanwick last week. I so enjoyed it. From the course I have written a short story, 3000 words, completely different in content and style to my normal writing. I’ve attached it for you to see what can be done with your teaching. It incorporates the exercises as well as, of course, all the in-depth characterisation that we did. Now you can see what you inspired.

My spectacular memories of Swanwick kept me going on my long journey home.  Not least of which was your wonderful course.   Thank you again for reawakening my fiction voice, Lexi.

I took part in Alexa’s Contemporary and Literary Fiction course at Swanwick Writers’ Conference in August 2011 and found her to be a very warm, encouraging and supportive tutor.  The creative exercises were inspiring and took my writing in new directions, which I will certainly explore in future.  I wouldn’t hesitate to take part in future courses or workshops run by Alexa, who is also extremely friendly and approachable outside of the ‘classroom’.

  1. Alexa’s Contemporary and Literary Fiction course and this year’s Swanwick Writers’ Summer School was a real eye-opener for me. Her approach was very hands-on, giving plenty of scope for experimentation and practice. I’m still working through the ideas she presented and am finding new approaches and inspirations from them even now. The course has encouraged me to expand the scope of my fiction and to be more daring. Alexa’s enthusiasm for writing was infectious and her course was one of the highlights of a week filled with highlights. Great course, great tutor.
